We all know how much enjoyment a dog can bring to a household, but how does a dog fit in with motor homing, and what are some of the most repeated concerns you should be aware of:
- The most important thing to consider is the size of your dog. A large dog will take up more space, and space is often at a premium in a motorhome.
- Where will your dog be sleeping? If your dog remains on the floor then make sure you have the space to move around them, especially on a wet day when you are sitting inside
- How do you control the temperature?
- Can I leave a dog in the car all day? (NO!) – can be illegal in some countries and for good reason: a car in the sun on a hot day can heat-stroke out your pup quickly.
- There are also several good Samaritan laws protecting citizens from prosecution if they break into your vehicle to ‘save’ your pet
- What do I do with the dog when I want to go somewhere that does not dog friendly?
- The pitch charges – some sites do not charge extra for dogs, whilst others do. Many sites will offer a dog walk or exercise area. It is possible to find sites that have dog wash areas and dog agility courses.
- Once on-site remember the rules around your dog. Most sites will require your dog to be always on a lead. They will ask you to pick up after your pet and dispose of poop in the bin (common sense). You should not leave your dog unattended in your motorhome whilst you go out!
- The Highway Code requires dogs (and other animals) to be ‘suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly’ (rule 57)
- If you would like to go abroad with your pet, all you need is a pet passport and you’re off
- The last thing you want is a wet dog in your motorhome, shaking and rubbing on your furniture. The most effective way to dry them off is with a doggy bag or using towels
So, in conclusion: we love dogs, but just to be aware that our normal rental agreement regarding damage applies and we reserve the right to charge a cleaning fee of £50 if the motorhome has been returned in an unsatisfactory state.
So, if you can return the motorhome in the same condition as you picked it up, we would be happy for you to take your furry friend.
That said, it’s a rewarding experience and worth the effort if your pet is important to you.
